Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise
How many times have you heard how beneficial water aerobics is for our joints? How soothing it is when done correctly? How it helps you recover quicker from surgeries than any other type of physical therapy? The same goes for our canine companions.
Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise has been used by many Registered Veterinary Technicians and Physical Therapists to aid in the healing post surgery, to help fight signs of arthritis and many more disabilities. However, I have found a way for it to help the canine psyche as well.
Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise helps dogs who are aggressive; learn to look to the person, whether it is the owner or myself, in the pool for leadership because they are on new grounds. A lot of dogs can have the muzzles removed when swimming because their minds are diligently working on keeping them swimming, not worrying about biting the closest hand.
Dogs that are scared, nervous or shy become self-confident with Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise. They realize they don’t always need Mom or Dad around to protect them. They learn something new that is also a life saving fundamental any dog should know.
I have also been using Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise for individuals who are handicapped and cannot supply the right source of outlet for their service dogs. A lot of the dogs have pent up energy because they are working all the time. And a large population is overweight because they don’t do much physical activity. With Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise, the owner can be involved by throwing tennis balls, toys and treats into the pool for the dogs to retrieve. They can coach them along from the sidelines leaving them very much involved in their dog’s activities.
The 86 degree water in the Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise pool helps keep joints moving, helps build muscles and is very low impact on their joints. The warm water keeps their muscles from tightening up and keeps their movement fluid. Canine Water Rehabilitation/Exercise sessions are 30 minutes long. If you are interested in learning more about these sessions call Rochelle at (760) 224-0911.

Lasher Rochelle’s personal dog who will be turning 10 this year. She started swimming him to help avoid any arthritis setting in. Lasher is also Rochelle’s Service Dog so she wanted to provide a non-impact activity to help keep his joints moving fluidly. |

Koopa This shy girl was very scared of noises and new things. To help build her self confidence we taught her to swim. The first two lessons were scary for her but now she is a star swimmer and looks forward to days in the pool. Her sensitivity to the unknown has dramatically decreased as well ! |

Tucker His story is the most amazing. This boy was so afraid of people that he always had to wear a muzzle when being trained, touched, groomed, etc. Putting him in the pool made him stop worrying about the person and kept his mind engaged on what he needed to do. He learned to trust ! As you can see there is no muzzle. Tucker has become much more accepting of hands and hardly wears a muzzle any more. A true Swim Star !! |
