Buckle Up, Pup: Why Pet Travel Safety Deserves a Second Look

When it comes to traveling with pets, most pet parents focus on the destination; the dog park, the groomer, the vet, or a cozy weekend away. But at Dogs On The Run, we believe it’s just as important to think about the journey. Specifically: Is your pet safe in the car?

While it’s not required by law in most states, securing your pet during vehicle travel is something we strongly encourage pet parents to consider.

The Hidden Risks of an Unrestrained Pet

Many people assume that because their dog or cat is calm in the car, there’s no need for a restraint. But the truth is, even the gentlest pup can become a hazard in a sudden stop or collision.

In fact, AAA reports that nearly 1 in 5 drivers admit to being distracted by their pet while driving, and only 16% use any form of restraint at all. That means a loose pet not only risks injury; they can also become a distraction, increasing the chances of an accident.

A Few Things to Consider:

  • A 30-pound dog can become a 1,200-pound projectile in a 30 mph crash.

  • An unrestrained pet may panic during a traffic event, potentially jumping out of a window or causing harm to themselves or others.

  • Even quick trips can turn dangerous; safety should always be part of the plan.

Simple, Safe Solutions That Make a Difference

You don’t need fancy equipment to improve your pet’s car safety. There are several travel options designed with pets in mind, including:

  • Pet seat belt harnesses

  • Crash-tested travel crates or carriers

  • Backseat boosters for small dogs

  • Barriers to prevent front-seat distractions

Most of these can be clipped into existing seatbelt systems or secured in the back seat or cargo area.

Traveling with a DOTR Professional?

If your pet will be transported by one of our DOTR professionals, we invite you to provide your own restraint system, harness, or carrier, if you have one. While we do not require it, this simple gesture helps keep everyone safe and can provide extra peace of mind; for you, your pet, and the professional behind the wheel.

Our Commitment to Care

At Dogs On The Run, our community is built on trust, communication, and thoughtful service. We don’t just connect families with professionals; we advocate for the best care possible, even in the small things.

A seatbelt for your pet is one of those small things.
It’s optional, but valuable. It may never be needed; but it’s the kind of detail that reflects just how much you care.
