Dogs On The Run Hosts Complimentary Reactivity Workshop at HQ
Dogs On The Run recently welcomed local pet parents to HQ for a complimentary Pawsitive Perspectives: Reactivity workshop presented by Michelle Hartley, ABCDT. The educational session offered a deeper understanding of what reactivity really is and how to support dogs experiencing big emotions.
Reactivity is often mislabeled as “aggression,” but as Michelle explained, many reactive behaviors stem from stress, fear, or a lack of emotional regulation. Behaviors such as leash reactivity, barrier frustration, resource guarding, and sensitivity during handling are frequently rooted in underlying stress responses rather than intent to harm.
The workshop explored how stress accumulates through trigger stacking, flooding, overstimulation from neighborhood walks, and even “window reactivity” at home. When stress hormones like cortisol remain elevated, dogs are more likely to react quickly and intensely.
Attendees also learned practical, positive reinforcement–based strategies to help reduce reactivity. Topics included decompression walks using a long lead to provide choice and freedom, the importance of sniffing and enrichment, thoughtful counterconditioning, noise desensitization, and tracking patterns through a reactivity journal. The session emphasized reducing stress rather than suppressing behavior.
By focusing on emotional well-being and proactive support, Dogs On The Run continues its commitment to modern, science-based training methods that build confidence and resilience in dogs.
